TECHNICAL & FUNCTIONAL QUALITIES

Reflecting the Maintenance & Grounds, and Stores, Stock & Procurement responsibility areas:
• Sound working knowledge of building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems, including generators, boreholes and water treatment, septic systems, solar installations, and pool plant.
• Able to plan, read, and manage a planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programme, rather than working reactively only.
• Comfortable managing asset registers, service schedules, and contractor relationships.
• Numerate, with the ability to manage a budget, negotiate with suppliers, and keep tight control over stock accuracy.
• Practical, working computer literacy — job card systems, stock/procurement software, spreadsheets, and basic reporting.

LEADERSHIP & PEOPLE MANAGEMENT QUALITIES:

Reflecting the Team Leadership & People Management responsibility area:
• A natural, hands-on leadership style — someone who leads from the front and earns credibility with a technical team, not only through title.
• Fair but firm when it comes to discipline, attendance, and performance conversations.
• A genuine interest in developing and mentoring staff, including more junior team members.
• Able to juggle and prioritise across several small teams and lodges — maintenance, grounds, and stores — at once.
• An approachable, calm communicator who can defuse tension and resolve day-to-day conflict within the team.

SAFETY, RISK & INTEGRITY QUALITIES:

Reflecting the Health, Safety & Compliance responsibility area, and the trust placed in this role over stock and assets:
• Safety-conscious by nature — someone who sets the tone for PPE use, hazard reporting, and safe work practices, rather than needing to be reminded.
• High personal integrity, particularly around stock, procurement, and supplier dealings — this role carries real exposure to shrinkage, favouritism, and kickbacks if the wrong person is appointed.
• Methodical and process-driven when it comes to compliance certificates, risk assessments, and record-keeping.
• Willing to take ownership of incidents — to investigate honestly and follow through on corrective action, rather than deflect or minimise.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES & CHARACTER

Qualities that sit above any single KRA, but make the difference between someone who can do this job and someone who will thrive in it:

• Resilient and level-headed — able to stay calm when infrastructure fails or an emergency arises, often with guests looking on.
• Genuinely hands-on and willing to get dirty; not a manager who only wants to work from an office.
• Available and willing to respond after hours, including nights, weekends, and during emergencies.
• Well organised and self-motivated, able to work with a good degree of independence in a remote setting.
• High attention to detail and pride in maintaining 5-star standards, even in the back-of-house areas guests never see.
• Trustworthy and discreet, given regular access to guest areas, staff accommodation, and lodge assets.
• Comfortable living and working in a remote bush environment, including sensible awareness of wildlife-related risks.
• A proactive, problem-solving mindset — someone who prevents fires rather than only fighting them.
